An honest position on AI and the church
I don't believe the church should look away from AI — I believe it should lean in carefully and use these tools to spread the gospel farther and faster. That takes boundaries as much as enthusiasm.
AI cannot do ministry
It can't sit with the grieving, disciple a new believer, or discern what God is doing in a congregation. Anyone selling AI as a replacement for pastoral work should be shown the door.
AI can absolutely do busywork
Communications, graphics, meeting summaries, admin drafts, reading a year of transactions for waste — the hours AI gives back are real, and they go back to people.

Congregant data never goes into public AI tools. Policy before adoption, disclosure norms before public content, and a named owner for it all. I wrote my own church's policy — literally.

Straight answers before you book anything
Do we need a big budget or a tech person?
No. Readiness is one person with permission to experiment, information written down where tools can reach it, and one bottleneck worth fixing. The readiness assessment will tell you honestly where you stand.
What about our people's privacy?
It's rule one: congregant personal information never goes into public AI tools. Anything touching sensitive data needs commercial terms with a no-training assurance in writing. This is the backbone of every policy I write.
Where do most churches start?
